President Jokowi’s Concern to Papua Development

President Jokowi has given more attention to Papua than any president since Soeharto. Jokowi comes up with real infrastructure developments with direct benefits for the people.

Jokowi revealed that in the past two and a half years the government has set its focus on accelerating infrastructure development and improving connectivity of West Papua with other regions. Government of Indonesia began implementing Trans Papua highway program. In the meantime, the program is focused on 12 cities in Papua Province, precisely in 12 remote cities in Papua.

Papua area has limited reach and accessibility. As the result, logistic prices in Papua are many times higher than in other regions in Indonesia. This program is expected to opening up isolation and alleviating poverty, and with this Trans Papua highway Papuan people can enjoy logistic supply with reasonable price. This program to advance connectivity is necessary for West Papua to help reduce the price disparity between Java and Papua, improve the competitiveness of local products, and also to open the isolated areas. President Jokowi has been five times observing the construction of infrastructure in Papua.

Government also has launched other programs; Indonesia Terang Program (PIT) by focusing buildings on power plants and delivering electricity infrastructure in Papua and West Papua Province has been inaugurated during the President’s visitation on October 17, 2016. In Manokwari has been inaugurated Wasior Port as part of sea toll program. Now Papua also has a magnificent airport, Dominie Eduard Osok (DEO). Dominie Eduard Osok Airport has a runaway of 2,060 meters and a width of 45 meters which can be landed by wide body and propeller planes.

The development in Papua is a manifestation of the President’s concern for the equality of human rights for all Indonesian people.
